Okay, I'm wanting to plan a family reunion in 2010. It will be the 1st wknd of August. I want to have it close to the National Harbor; which is new. Because most of the family is coming from out of town..I want to make it doable #1, and not too costly. Of course, I need to find a hotel, which has all the hospitality that there is to offer, a banquet hall and then needing picnic area for Sunday. Please help???

I am familiar with a few DC hotels,as well as a lot of event planners. I can help you with a few tips, I do know that the Gaylord hotel is very expensive as well as their banquet facilities. I also can defintly help you in the area of reunion T-shirts. Please email me if you are interested. Travisfields@me.com

I am working on planning the same type of event for August 2010. We are looking at the Gaylord or anywhere in Metropolitan DC, MD, VA. Maybe we can share information so it won't be so much work. We are also looking for a cookout/picnic event.

Definitely, we can share and bounce ideas back and forth. Remember, I haven't done this before and am having some practice with a mini reunion that I'm planning for my cousins on my father's side of the family. Please stay in touch!

Wow! I'm in the same boat as you all. I'm helping my sister with the planning of our family reunion for 2010 here in the DC area. We've already got an idea of the events of the weekend, but I know I'm going to run into a problem when it comes to the finding the best hotel. I would LOVE to book something at the National Harbor, since there's a multitude of places for guests to enjoy, but I think it will be too costly. We're looking to have it around the end of August.
I'm up for sharing ideas. A couple of thoughts off the top of my head: 1) Having fund raisers to help with your reunion fees. That will definitely assist in lowering the fees per person. 2)You may want to look for a hotel that offers shuttle bus service to/from the airport, and also offers continental breakfast.

Fantastic! Thank you for responding. Definitely, I'm trying to keep the cost as economic as possible. Again, I'd like this to be a doable reunion. I have considered the Gaylord but it "is going to cost" and we haven't really spent more than $119/night for our reunions (that I can remember). I don't see the Gaylord falling into this category. If you could, please share the planned events that you have and I will share what I had in mind. I am also going to look into Annapolis. But, I really want the National Harbor.

Since you really want the National Harbor, why not check into that hotel down on Oxon Hill Road, just outside of the Harbor entrance? It used to be a Best Western, but I think they've changed the name. I know they have a meeting room in there, so if you're to have a banquet, that may be a good spot to look into. It's right off the beltway, so one shouldn't have a problem finding it. Depending on the number of people that will attend, this may be a better choice economically. When you send out your "Save the Date" letter, make sure you include a survey so you'll get an idea of just how many will attend.
Our family reunion is going to be as simple as possible, but much different than what we've been having the past 16 years. Right now, we don't have a full committee; it's just my sister and I. So far, we're looking at having our Meet-n-Greet as a Game Night instead of the usual meet at the hotel, sit back and talk type of thing. We want everyone of all ages to be involved, and we want to make sure the first night gears everyone up to have an enjoyable weekend.
What are some of your ideas?

If anyone need the services of an event planner whose passion is Family Reunions, email g_n_lancaster@sbcglobal.net. I also do genealogy research for your family. I'm in the Dallas, TX area, but can work with any family nationwide. I can do all or part of the planning for you from researching and booking the venue, sending the invitations, family reunion web pages for posting updates and pictures, etc, and arranging the entertainment. I'd love to help you.
